As an HVAC tech it was always funny, yet a pain in the ass, to service an air conditioner that a home owner fabricated a sun shade on top of.
They THINK that the little home made shade will make it more efficient. But in fact once the air is moving it makes NO DIFFERENCE to the incoming air temperature at all, and in fact many times causes air to reflect off of the shade itself and cause it to recirculate back into the coil intake!
