Air Conditioning
Air conditioning refers to the cooling and dehumidifying of indoor air for thermal comfort. An air conditioner is an appliance that is installed in some way in a building and is designed to stabilize the air temperature in your home. The use of air conditioners is not limited to the home, office or other building though, because they are also used in vehicles. The practice of using air conditioning to cool homes dates back to Ancient Rome. They used aqueduct water that was circulated through the walls of certain houses to cool them. Modern air conditioning emerged during the 19th Century with advances in chemistry.
There are two main air conditioning applications:
- Comfort Application – this application is aimed at providing an indoor environment that keeps the temperature inside at a relatively constant range preferred by humans despite changes in the weather and temperature conditions outside.
- Process Application – this application aims to provide a suitable environment for a process being carried out. Although always in the comfort range, the temperature depends on the process rather than on human preference.
There are air conditioners that can be installed directly into your house but there are also portable air conditioners that can be used in homes and small areas. Portable air conditioners are air conditioners that are on wheels that can be easily transported inside a home or office. They are placed in a window and the air from outside is taken and cooled and then blown out into the house. This is different from an air conditioner that is not portable. Most household air conditioners that are hooked up to your furnace and the cold air is blown out through the household vents.
